Book Acticity

Active toddlers run, jump, and hop a little in a bright playful romp of a board book.

Age Group 12 months

What’s Happening at this Age

  • Looking at pictures and begin to name familiar items like dog, cup, and baby
  • Answering questions about what they see in books
  • Recognizing the covers of favorite books
  • Beginning to recognize when a book is upside down

All of a sudden, your baby doesn’t seem like a baby anymore! This is an amazing time for your little one as they’re very aware of the world around them. Even though they’re not saying them yet, your baby is already learning words. A wonderful way to learn new words is by pointing out pictures in favorite books and talking about each thing on the page. They’re also learning about how books work so having them hand you a book can give you a chance to talk about how you hold it. Letting your baby turn the pages gives you an opportunity to praise their own efforts at handling a book.

Why did we select this book?

Once your child starts to walk, it won't be long before he is also running, hopping, and jumping (and you are running after them). Even if you do not know the song that this book is based on, you can still hear the rhythm in the words as you read them. We selected the book because it allows you to play with the rhythm of the language and the rhythm of your child's movements.

Related Activities

The rhythm and beat of this book get you and your child moving, no matter whether they are a walker yet or not. This is a great book to sit on the floor with. Hold your child close to you and bounce together to the beat or simply clap it out together. A child that feels the beat of language will have an easier time coming to understand and use that language.
